K-4 Literacy Curriculum

Students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade are engaged in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking critically about text through our daily Readers and Writers Workshop Blocks. Students also engage with the Big 5 from the National Reading Panel (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension) through a daily 30-minute Structured Literacy block that aligns with the Science of Reading. Student growth is measured through a variety of assessments including DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency, Kilpatrick PAST, Institute for Multi-sensory Education’s Orton-Gillingham weekly assessments, and Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. In compliance with New Jersey Public Law 2013, c.210, all students are given a MAP Reading Fluency Dyslexia Screener to help identify students who possess indicators of dyslexia. Students also have access to Lexia Core 5 to help reinforce their daily literacy learning. Lexia Core 5 is recommended for nightly homework practice. This online learning platform reinforces skills such as decoding, encoding, fluency, phonological awareness, and morphology study. As a district, we encourage you to read nightly with your child to help foster a love of literature.
